How to Use AI Clipping
Step One: Accessing the Tool
On your HeyGen homepage, click on Apps, and then choose AI Clipping.
Step Two: Input URL or Upload Video
Paste the video URL or upload the video you want to create a highlight reel from.
Step Three: Customize Your AI Clipping
Clip Duration: Set the preferred length range for each highlight clip.
Clip Aspect Ratio: Choose the aspect ratio for your clips (16:9, 9:16, or 1:1).
Caption Settings: Enable captions by selecting a style, or turn them off.
Additional instructions : Specify what to include, exclude, or emphasize in your clips.
Click Surprise me for a suggestion.
Step four (Optional): Refine After Rendering
Once AI Clipping finishes, open any clip to preview it. The panel on the right gives you three tabs:
Actions : everything you can do with the finished clip:
Export XML — download an XML file to continue editing in external software.
Publish to YouTube — send the clip straight to YouTube.
Upscale Video — boost the resolution for a sharper result.
Quick Avatar Video — turn the clip into an avatar-led video.
Generate B-Roll — add supporting background footage.
More apps — access HeyGen's other tools to keep building.
Transcript : the full spoken text, timestamped line by line. You can Copy All, Download SRT (a caption/subtitle file), or Search transcript to jump to a specific moment.
Score : an AI rating of how engaging the clip is likely to be, shown as an overall grade (for example, 73 / B+ – Moderate) broken down into:
Hook — how strongly the opening grabs attention.
Flow — how clearly the clip communicates its story.
Value — how useful or memorable the takeaway is.
Trend — how well the topic fits what's currently popular.
Use the Score to decide which clips are worth posting first — higher scores tend to perform better, and the breakdown tells you why a clip is strong or where it falls short.
Below the player, you'll also see All clips from [your video] — every highlight Magic Clips pulled from the source, so you can preview and download them individually.
Things to Know When Using AI Clipping

For Uploaded Videos:
File Types: MP4, MOV, WEBM
File Size: Up to 10GB
For Uploaded Videos and YouTube Links:
Process videos as short as 1 minute or as long as 10 hours. For videos around 1 minute, there may not be enough footage to create a comprehensive highlight. Longer videos provide better results!
