How to Design and Import Canva Creations into HeyGen
HeyGen allows you to design visuals in Canva and import them directly into HeyGen using the Canva integration. This workflow is useful if you prefer designing layouts, graphics, and slides in Canva while using HeyGen for avatar narration, voice, and video generation.
This article walks you through the full process—from designing in Canva to importing and finalizing your video in HeyGen.
What This Integration Supports
With the Canva integration, you can:
Design slides, layouts, and visuals in Canva
Add a HeyGen Avatar on your design in Canva.
Import Canva designs into HeyGen as PPTx or video scenes
Add avatars, scripts, and voices inside HeyGen
Generate and export avatar-led videos using your Canva visuals
Step 1: Design Your Content in Canva
Open Canva and create a new design.
Choose a template or start from a blank canvas.
Add and customize:
Text
Images
Shapes and design elements
Finalize your layout exactly how you want it to appear in the video.
Your Canva design will act as the visual foundation for your HeyGen video.
Step 2: Connect Canva with HeyGen
Before importing designs, you need to connect your Canva account to HeyGen.
Log in to HeyGen.
Go to Apps in your dashboard.
Go to Integrations.
Find and click on Canva.
Authorize the connection between Canva and HeyGen.
Once connected, HeyGen tools will be available inside Canva.
Step 3: Add an Avatar HeyGen to Your Canva Design
After connecting the integration:
Open your Canva design.
Use the HeyGen integration to:
Insert avatars
Add or edit scripts
Select voices for narration
Adjust timing, visuals, and layout as needed.
Your Canva design is now linked with HeyGen’s video and avatar tools.
Step 4: Export from Canva
When your design is ready:
Click Share in Canva.
Select Download.
Choose MP4 - or PPTX as the file format if you want to import avatars into HeyGen directly.
Download the file.
This exported file is now a video presentation with an Avatar on it!
Step 5 : Edit and Customize in HeyGen
Once your Canva format PPTx is imported into HeyGen, you can further refine your video for more flexibility and fine-tuned adjustments:
Add or change avatars
Update scripts and narration
Adjust voice, pacing, and delivery
Fine-tune scene timing and flow
You can also create your video directly in HeyGen first, then export it and place it into your Canva design for full creative control over the final layout.
This lets you combine Canva’s design flexibility with HeyGen’s avatar-driven video generation.
Step 6: Save and Reuse Your Design
After editing:
Save the videos or PPTx to your Projects
Reuse the same Canva-based layout for future videos
Swap scripts or avatars without redesigning from scratch
This makes it easy to maintain visual consistency across multiple videos.
Notes & Limitations
Canva designs are imported as visual layouts; complex animations may not fully translate.
Custom avatars and export quality depend on your HeyGen plan.
Canva Integration – FAQ
Why use Canva + HeyGen together?
Because it gives you the best of both worlds: Canva for beautiful design, and HeyGen for dynamic, avatar-powered videos, simple, flexible, and fun.
Can I design my video in Canva first?
Yes! You can create your full design in Canva, then export it as a video or a PPTx and import it into HeyGen to add avatars, voice, and animation.
Can I import my Canva design into HeyGen with all my fonts, elements, and videos?
Most of the time, yes, but some Canva fonts and certain elements may not be fully supported when imported, which can create compatibility issues (font substitutions, layout shifts, or missing elements).
If you want the smoothest workflow, we recommend Method 2: create the video in HeyGen first, then export and place it into your Canva design for full control over the final look.
Which file format should I use?
Choose MP4 or PPTX if you want to import your project into HeyGen and add avatars directly.
Can I also start in HeyGen instead?
Absolutely. This is Method 2. You can create your video in HeyGen first, then export it and place it into your Canva design for final layout and branding touches.
