How to Access Your Camera and Microphone on Your Mobile Device

This article helps users understand how to allow camera and microphone access on mobile devices, including smartphones, tablet, our native app, and web browsers on mobile devices like Safari and Chrome.

You'll need your camera and microphone to create a Digital Twin (video avatar) and record your Voice. Whether you're using the HeyGen mobile app or HeyGen in your phone's browser (Safari or Chrome), here's how to grant access.

Note: Exact menu names can vary slightly by device, manufacturer, and OS version. These steps are written for the latest iOS 26 (iPhone & iPad) and Android 16, but are nearly identical on recent earlier versions.

Using the HeyGen App

Turn on Cam & Mic

The first time you start creating an avatar or recording your voice, your phone will ask for permission to use the camera and microphone. Tap Allow to grant access.

iPhone & iPad (iOS)

iOS shows a separate prompt for each one:

  • "HeyGen" Would Like to Access the Camera → tap Allow.

  • "HeyGen" Would Like to Access the Microphone → tap Allow.

Android

Android shows a system dialog for each permission. Choose While using the app for both:

  • Allow HeyGen to take pictures and record video? → tap While using the app.

  • Allow HeyGen to record audio? → tap While using the app.

Error: Device Not Authorized

If you tapped Don't Allow the first time by accident, the app can't reach your camera or mic. You would need to access your phone's settings to enable access again.

iPhone & iPad (iOS)

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Scroll down and tap Apps.

  3. Turn on the toggles for both Camera and Microphone.

  4. Reopen the HeyGen app and try again.

Tip: You can also manage this by permission type: Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera, turn on HeyGen, then repeat under Privacy & Security > Microphone.

Android

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap Apps, then select HeyGen (tap See all apps if you don't see it).

  3. Tap Permissions.

  4. Tap Camera and choose Allow only while using the app.

  5. Go back and repeat for Microphone.

  6. Reopen the HeyGen app and try again.

Note: On Samsung (One UI) the path is the same (Settings > Apps > HeyGen > Permissions). On some phones you can also use Settings > Security & privacy > Permission manager > Camera / Microphone and set HeyGen to allow.

Still Not Working?

  • Make sure the HeyGen app (or your browser) is updated to the latest version from the App Store / Google Play.

  • Close any other app that might be using your camera or mic (a video call, camera, or recording app), then try again.

  • Confirm your camera lens isn't covered and that it works in your phone's default Camera app.

  • Restart your device and try again.
