Video Avatars come with an option to remove the background from your footage, available on all paid subscriptions. This guide will walk you through how to enable this feature during the avatar creation process and how to use it in the AI Studio.

Step 1: Enable Background Removal During Initial Avatar Creation
When first creating your avatar, look for the option labeled "AI background matting" and check the box. By selecting this option, HeyGen will generate two versions of your avatar—one with the original background and one with the background removed.
Step 2: 'Edit' Your Avatar
Once your avatar is created, you will edit that version by selecting 
'Edit Avatar' under the three dots in the top right corner of the newly created avatar.
Next, on the edit screen, you will click 
'Background Matting' then 'Save Changes'.
Once processing is complete, you will see the two avatars on your Avatars homepage under the 'Video Avatar' tab.
Step 3: Use Your Avatar in AI Studio
Once your avatars are created, head over to AI Studio. You’ll see both versions of your avatar available in the Avatar section 
on the Sidebar.
Choose your Avatar with the Background Removed and insert it onto the work board.
Now you can change the background color, add a photo, or maybe some text—time to let your creativity shine!
Step 3: Submit Your Video
After enabling the background removal and wrapping up your project, the final step is simple: submit your video and watch the HeyGen Magic 🪄 happen.

Can I remove my Avatar background on a Creator plan?
Yes! As of March 17, 2025, all paid users have access to remove the background on Video Avatars.
Can I remove the background from an avatar after creation?
No, the background removal can only be done during the avatar creation process. If you missed checking the box when creating your avatar, you’ll need to resubmit your footage and enable the feature.
Is background removal available for all avatars?
